FAQ

NSPE's Commitment to You: An Updated FAQ

Q1: What's the status of the NSPE federation relationship with the Illinois state society?
A: NSPE has recently transitioned the relationship with the Illinois state society. As you may know, the Illinois state society board decided in 2025 that a new independent structure would give them greater flexibility to focus on the unique needs of Illinois engineers. While NSPE had a valued, long-standing integrated partnership, our commitment to supporting professional engineers in Illinois and in all states and territories is as strong as ever. NSPE  members that reside in Illinois are now designated as NSPE At-Large members, ensuring you retain full national benefits.

Q2: Does this change affect my NSPE membership and benefits?
A: Your NSPE membership and all its national benefits remain completely unchanged. The difference is that you'll now manage your membership with the Illinois society (now called ESI) and with NSPE separately - you will now have two distinct memberships if you wish to be a part of both organizations. We understand that managing two memberships may be challenging, but this ensures you can continue to participate in both the national community and your local state society.

Q3: What is the new process for renewing my NSPE membership?
A: You can renew your NSPE membership directly and easily online. Just go to https://www.nspe.org/renew and log in to your account. If you'd like to join another federation integrated state society within NSPE, please reach out to memserv@nspe.org, and we can add it to your record.

Because ESI is no longer integrated with NSPE, “Illinois” will not be available in the state society drop-down during renewal. If you are in Illinois and want state-level membership, you will need to join ESI separately via their site.

Q4: How does NSPE continue to add value and advocate for the profession?
A: Our mission to foster PEs in service to society continues unchanged. NSPE is the only organization that advocates for the entire engineering profession at the national level. We will continue to be a powerful voice for PE licensure and professional issues that impact engineers in Illinois, throughout the country, and in all U.S. territories. This is a critical role that benefits all engineers, no matter where they practice.
